Microsoft's Windows Media is a powerful software platform enabling the creation, distribution, and consumption of digital media across a wide-range of consumer playback products and environments. It includes components such as Windows Media Player, Windows Media Encoder, Windows Media Server, Windows Media Digital Rights Management, and the Windows Media Video and Audio codecs. Windows Media also encompasses a variety of Software Development Kits (SDKs) that enable software and hardware developers to create powerful products for the creation, protection, distribution, and consumption of digital media from HD to mobile experiences.

VC-1
The codec that was formerly known as Microsoft's Windows Media Video 9 has been officially standardized by SMPTE as codec standard 421M (VC-1). As such, Microsoft's Windows Media Video codec is now considered an implementation of the VC-1 standard and Microsoft is required to license VC-1 under the same conditions and fees that apply to all companies seeking to license the technology from the MPEG Licensing Authority, the administrator of the VC-1 patent pool.
